Welcome to the Society of Physics Students at Columbia University!
The Society of Physics Students at Columbia University is a student-run club which aims to provide a forum for students interested in physics to meet in an informal setting.
During the academic year, the SPS meets every Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in 831 Pupin Laboratories. Free food is served. Several times each semester, students or professors present their research, or graduate physics students make advising presentations. To receive emails about our weekly meetings and other news, email hbar@phys.columbia.edu. All are welcome to come and enjoy the free food and ever-stimulating conversation. The SPS has a lounge (Pupin 612 and 614) open for physics majors and other SPS attendees.
3 June 2008: The Columbia SPS Summer GRE Review Group meets every Tuesday and Thursday during the summer at 6:30 pm in Pupin 831. Foodstuffs and physics will be supplied. Special guest appearances by various unsuspecting grad students should be expected. 28 January 2008: Professor David Griffiths of Reed College (the one who wrote your quantum mechanics and E&M and elementary particle physics textbooks) is coming to Columbia to speak at a colloquium. His talk will be about calculating the dipole moment for which the Schrodinger equation for a point charge in the field of an electric dipole admits bound states. 3 May 2007: There will be a regular meeting this week, and next week there will be an informal local outing during the regular meeting time. 26 April 2007: Dr. Boris Kayser will speak about his research on neutrinos in the theory group at Fermilab. 13 February 2007: Columbia Professor Philip Kim will give a talk about his research in nano-condensed matter physics, titled "Electrical and Thermal transport in Small Systems". 25 January 2007: Thomas Dumitrescu, a physics undergrad, will give a talk titled "Kepler, Newton and the Birth of Theoretical Physics". The abstract is here. 7 December 2006: Columbia undergrad Genevieve Shattow will give a short presentation about her year studying astrophysics at Oxford. The abstract is here. 16 November 2006: \ \ p> Columbia physics professor Gustav Brooijmans will the state of particle physics research in a talk titles "What to search for? Theoretical and experimental prejudice in the quest for new physics" The abstract is here. The SPS would very much like to stay in contact with its graduating members. If you are an SPS graduate who would like to keep in touch with the SPS please send an email to hbar with your name, an email address you would like to be contacted with from time to time, and a brief description of your current plans regarding graduate school or other alternatives. |
